Synopsis

They say it’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

Finn McGraw disagrees.

He was just seventeen when he had a torrid summer affair with the girl who stole his heart—and then inexplicably turned on him. Finn may have moved on with his life, but he’s never forgotten her.

Now, ten years later, he’s got more than his lost love to worry about. A horrific accident turns his life upside down, resurrecting the ghosts of his long-dead family and taking the lives of the few people he has left.

Finn always believed his estranged brother was responsible for the fire that killed their family—but an unexpected inheritance with a mystery attached throws everything he knows into doubt.

And on top of that, the beguiling daughter of his wealthy employer has secrets of her own. But the closer he gets, the harder she pushes him away.

The Seacrest is a story of intrigue and betrayal, of secrets and second chances—and above all, of a love that never dies.

My Review

The Seacrest story is about second chance love, betrayal, pain and hatred.

The story starts with Finn finding out his wife Cora and brother Jax have died in a car accident. Finn is devastated his wife is dead but starts questioning why were they in the car together, since Finn hasn't spoken to his brother in 10 years.

"Life can change in the blink of an eye. This blink came when a cop car cruised up The Seascrest's white shell driveway on a hot Saturday in July"

In this book we get flashes back to the past, Finns first love, Sassy. Sassy isn't her real name but she wants to hide her identity from Finn until Finn gets to know her better. Finn met Sassy when he was sixteen and they start seeing each other but hiding it from her family as her father would have never let her out if he found out she was seeing someone. Finn falls very quickly for Sassy, he loves everything about her and after only a few days decides he wants to spend the rest of his life with her.

"I'm nuts about you. You know that." She smiled. "I know. You've only told me about a thousand times." "Do you love me?" I asked. She pouted. "I wouldn't be here if I didn't."

Back in the present Finn is dealing with losing his wife and uncovering why his Cora was in a car with his brother Jax. Finn hates Jax and has a lot of anger towards him because he thinks Jax accidentally killed his parents in a fire 10 years ago. At the same time, Finn is working at The Seacrest as a gardener and is becoming closer with Libby the boss's daughter but she is usually mean and bitchy towards Finn but has been better since the death of his wife and brother.

Back in the past Finn and Sassy are having the best summer of their lives, falling in love and exploring each other's bodies.

"It's okay, big guy." she said to my private parts. I laughed with a crazy sound, so glad she hadn't said "little guy."

Back in the present Finn starts uncovering more about Cora and his brother Jax and starts to deal with his past with Sassy and discovers that he probably never got over her.

Back in the past Summer is coming to an end and Sassy is heading to Switzerland for school. Finn is going to visit her on their last night together but when he gets there Sassy tells him they are over and tells him he is disgusting and deceitful and she never wants to talk to him again. Finn has no idea why she is doing this and starts writing to her school every week to try to understand what happened but Sassy sends back all of his letters unopened.

Back in the present Finn uncovers the lie that lead Sassy to think those things about Finn and he is devastated that the one person in his life that should never have hurt him has taken almost everyone from him and left Finn all alone.

I'm going to leave it there, this is partly a mystery and I don't want to ruin it for anyone.

Okay, now to my thoughts and why I only gave this book 3 stars. This may not make much sense because I am trying to not put any spoilers in this review.

This love story has some serious potential but missed the mark with Finn being to easy going and accommodating, when he should have had more passionate replies to things that were going on in his life. In a few scene's the love of his life is crying and Finn just lets her go and just thinks that he will talk to her later about it. The huge secret is 16 years old and they see each other every day, this girl was the love of his life, he was obsessed with her and he wrote to her afterwards for years to talk to him but when they are face to face he does not push her to tell him what happened until it's been 16 years :/ that just doesn't make sense to me. And also Finn didn't realise he was still in love with Sassy until after his wife's death and even said in the story he wanted children with his wife Cora. All of that while he still spent almost everyday with the love of his life? I just don't believe that he really loved her then if he was happily coasting through life seeing her everyday and planning on a family with his wife who he says he did love just maybe not enough.

Overall I liked it, it was fun, steamy, with a bit of suspense and some twists and turns but I didn't love it.

From what I can tell this is Aaron Paul Lazar first romance story and has also written many mystery books which have high ratings, so I will be checking them out as well.
