Synopsis

She has a secret.

I’m complicated. Not broken or ruined or running from a past I can’t face. Just complicated.

I thought my life couldn’t get any more tangled in deceit and confusion. But I hadn’t met him. I hadn't realized how far I could fall or what I'd do to get free.

He has a secret.

I’ve never pretended to be good or deserving. I chase who I want, do what I want, act how I want.

I didn’t have time to lust after a woman I had no right to lust after. I told myself to shut up and stay hidden. But then she tried to run. I’d tasted what she could offer me and damned if I would let her go.

One secret destroys them.

My Review

MIND-BLOWING

NERVE-RACKING

EMOTIONAL

BRILLANT

When people ask me who my favorite author is I have a hard time answering because I read so much and I truly do love so many but I’d be lying if I said that Pepper Winters didn’t always pop into my head first.

Why? Well, let me tell you…

I fell in love with Pepper writing in Tears of Tess and Quintessentially Q. She has a way with words unlike any other author I have come across. Her descriptions and details are mind-blowing, the suspense in her books is nerve-racking, and her words, every single one of them, are brilliant. She has a way to pull you into her stories from the very start and not let go for long after the story has finished. Destroyed is going to be one of those stories that will stay with you for a long time after its end.

I was obsessed with finding redemption. Destroyed by love. Possessed by hope.
Consumed by a past I couldn’t shake.

Imagine living a life of pure hell. A life where your only objective is to fulfill the demands of the utmost gruesome kind of human beings. You don’t know what it’s like to feel, to touch, to love. You have no idea how to think for yourself…your sole purpose of living is to follow commands. You are no longer a son, a brother, a person…you are now a Ghost.

The synopsis of this book does not do it justice. Not by a long shot. The depth of story and emotion is beyond what you could imagine.

“Fox” is a damaged man. A man beyond redemption. A man who craves blood and bruises. It’s his only outlet and he thrives on it, needs it like he needs the air he breathes.

Hazel is a woman with a past. A past she never wants to look back on. She is a fighter. She has done things she isn’t proud of and if life would allow her she would regret it. But she doesn’t. She can’t. Her only salvation is who she is now and she will do whatever it takes to hold onto that person for as long as she can.

I thought she was a saint.

She thought I was a sinner.

Too bad we didn’t try to find the truth.

WE both paid the price.

We destroyed each other.

Two people come together in hopes to save a life. One being selfish, the other selfless.

What does it take to find redemption? Can one person truly save another? Is it right to put that burden on another life? How far would you go to get the salvation you desire?

“I can’t do this anymore"
I launched myself at her, shoving her against the opposite wall. My heart exploded as my mouth crashed hard on hers.
It wasn't sweet. It wasn't planned.  It was angry and violent, and everything that I needed.

Hazel thinks she has found the answer in “Fox”. She thinks he will be able to give her what she needs…at least for now. But what she didn't expect was a man so damaged and broken that he is beyond help. Hazel see’s the good in people. She wants to help save him. She wants to be the person who brings him out of the darkness. However, she isn't enough and he proves that to her by going too far with her. She’s doesn't think she can do it anymore. She can’t save him anymore than she can save anyone else. But that doesn't mean she is going to give up. Hazel is a fighter. Despite how “Fox” has treated her she keeps coming back. Will she ever be enough for him and will he ever be the man she needs?

“I want you so damn much my skin screams for your touch and my fingers ache to reciprocate, but I want to know you. I want to push you to break you, hoping you’ll find a way back to normality. But it doesn't work, and you end up hurting me…”  -Hazel

He thought he found the answer in Hazel, but now he thinks he was wrong. He proved that several times. He is a bastard that lied and hurt her, and took something from her. He can’t even stand the sight of himself. He needs to be done with her because he can’t risk hurting her, or worse…

Then he sees her- Clara. “Fox” sees something in her that he’s never experienced. When what he believes is the key to his salvation is standing in front of him he will do whatever it takes to keep her. She becomes his light and his salvation all in one.

My vision blurred around the edges

My Gravity shifted.

I fell madly fucking in love.

I knew I shouldn’t do it.

I knew I should run and never look back.

But I didn’t.

Her touch shattered me.

Her touch awoke me.

Her touch destroyed me.

That’s the thing about light though…it eventually burns out, and usually when you are least prepared for the darkness.

This is truly an amazing book. I don’t even have words to describe my feelings for it, the words go beyond my vocabulary. The characters are unique and the story line is different. There are twists and turns that will keep you on high alert and your mind full of anticipation.

Roan’s/Fox’s past is unlike any character’s I have ever read. I both loved and hated him but I was also incredibly sad for him. The things he did were unforgivable and yet I understood. That’s the other thing about Pepper Winters. She really has a way with playing with my mind. She has a way of twisting the wrongs and making you see them as right. Things you thought were unforgivable are now a condition of a deeper issue…and not necessarily unworthy of forgiveness.

If he could wrap his arms around me and give me a sanctuary to cry in, I would forgive him for evertything.

A hug would grant me hope.

A hug would show me promise.

But asking him to hug me was like asking for the moon. It wasn't possible.

Hazel is an extremely strong character. I admired her strength and will to fight for those she cared about. I did question some decisions she made but understood them too.

This is not a really dark read. Not really. It’s like Pepper said…it’s more of a grey read. Yes, Fox does horrible things but he is remorseful. He does them as a result of deeper issues and he wants more than anything to change who he is. He hates…literally HATES himself for the things he does. To see the battle he lives with on a moment to moment basis is heartbreaking. My nerves ached and my heart broke for him. Same with Hazel. God, what she went through was the worst kind of nightmare. There were points in this book that I was crying so hard I couldn't read anymore. I had to shut down my kindle and just breathe and take a minute to regroup.

This is a masterpiece no doubt. I loved the shorter blubs at the start of each chapter. They are so intense and raw and amazingly written that I could go back thru the book just to re-read those.

If you are even the slightest fan of this author then you need to pick up Destroyed now. If you are second guessing because you thought Tears of Tess or Quintessentially Q was too dark for you…don’t let that stop you. This is nothing like those books. It kind of had the same feeling to it but I think that is just because Pepper’s writing is so unique that I couldn’t help but notice. Whereas Q wants to hurt and inflict pain on Tess…Roan “Fox” does not. He would rather kill himself then hurt someone he cares about.

Resurrection. Redemption. Resolution.

“You’re destined to kill me, aren’t you?”

“Not killing you—making you live.”

This just went to my number one of 2014 and it will take a lot to top it. Thank you again, Pepper Winters for sharing such an intense and mind-blowing story with us.
