I saw his arm raised from the corner of my eye. I leaned forward to get out of the way of his flailing hand. I glanced back at him.

“Sorry,” he mumbled. I was rendered mute.

First thing I saw was his shirt riding up over his hips, revealing his perfectly toned skin. I leaned forward and craned my neck down, trying to catch a glimpse of his abs, when a low rumble emitted from his mouth, making me whip fully around. My face lit up on fire.

“You like what you see, Sunshine?” His voice took me off guard. The low rumble sounded like he had just woken up from a night of heavy sleeping. It was sexy and daring and dark.

“Not really,” I said, trying to mask my instant attraction to him. His eyes captured me when I looked up at him. They were deep gray, almost like a storm cloud rolling with the wind. His light brownish-blond hair complimented his tanned skin, making his appearance even more appealing.

At the tip of his hoodie, black lines curved along his collar bone, hinting at a larger tattoo somewhere beneath his shirt. I tried to focus elsewhere, but this guy was fucking perfection. His thick bottom lip, his nose that was a little crooked at the bridge. He had a fucking dimple!

“Luke,” he said. He smirked, showing off his dimple as if daring me to lick it. Strangely enough, he had on khaki pants, tailored so well they looked professional. The khaki and hoodie combo was bizarre, and the difference in top and bottom was not lost on me.

“Excuse me?” I asked back, remembering that he spoke, the fog dissipating, replaced with confusion.

“My name is Luke.” His voice was light, not condescending or rude like I would’ve thought it to be. I frowned, glared, and then turned around in my seat without uttering a single word. He was being nice?

My Review

For The Love of Ash is the story of Maggie and Luke. Two people who are beholden to their families even as they trying to figure out where each of their own lives are headed. As they both navigate a life that they didn't anticipate, they struggle to find their direction and are left to wonder if there will be a place in their own lives for each other.

Maggie is a college student and now legal guardian to her brother. After their parents died, Maggie took responsibility for him even though that meant getting behind in school and having to scrap to get by. Not only does she have to worry about bills and her own well being, she now has to worry about her brother who is finding the transition difficult.

Luke decided to finally start making choices for his life that don't necessarily line up with what his parents expect of him. But the reality of his siblings home life makes it impossible for him to start his own life the way to truly wants to. So even though he is a school teacher, something his parents don't approve of, he still lives at home so that he can help watch over his family.

Maggie and Luke first meet in a college class they share, but soon realize that they share more in common than that: Maggie's brother. Luke is his teacher. When Maggie's carefully constructed world starts to intersect, she finds herself at a loss. She's not sure how to or even if she wants to keep Luke out even if she knows that she isn't looking for a relationship. Luke feels a strong pull to Maggie and tries to keep his distance, but time determines that he may not be able to stop himself from falling for her.

With lots of push and pull, Maggie and Luke's story kept me turning the pages. I loved their dynamic especially when all their siblings were added to the mix. Both had demons they were fighting but when they finally let go, it was a beautiful sight.

What Others Are Saying About Taylor Lavati

"One for readers at the older end of the 'young adult' spectrum, The Thousand Year Curse is clearly the work of a gifted young writer. The plot and the basic premise have already been spelled out by other reviewers but what struck me most about the book was the deft and surprisingly mature touch of the author." Jay G

"I fell in love with Taylor's writing when I read the first book in her Curse Books. When I opened this book I wasn't positive what would be waiting on the other side for me, but I was certain it would be a reading adventure. Taylor didn't disappoint." Bestselling author Jesse Kimmel-Freeman
