There once was a boy, and I loved him.

Logan Francis Silverstone and I were complete opposites. I danced, and he stood still. He was quiet, while I ran my mouth. He struggled to find a smile, and I refused to frown.

The night I saw the darkness that truly lived inside of him, I couldn't look away.

We were broken together, yet somehow whole. We were wrong together, but always right. We were the stars that burned across the night sky, searching for a wish, praying for better tomorrows.

Until the day I lost him. He threw us away with one hasty decision--a decision that changed us forever.

There once was a boy, and I loved him.

And for a few breaths, a few whispers, a few moments, I think he loved me, too.

My Review

The Fire Between High & Lo is a standalone second chance novel about two best friends that are ripped apart by tragedy and painful pasts until their futures start converging again out of necessity. Logan and Alyssa have seemingly nothing in common yet in reality their lives are more similar than anyone would think. As they both struggle through their adolescence, they form a seemingly unbreakable bond. But their demons start wrecking havoc leaving only the charred remains of a once strong alliance. Through years of silence and abandonment, Logan and Alyssa can never seem to lose their connection and just when all seems lost, they are brought together for the toughest storm yet.

Logan comes from a poor, drug addicted mother and an abusive dealer father. He's got exactly two people he can count on: his older brother and his best friend. Alyssa comes from a wealthy but distant family. Her mother thinks very little of her, her father is absent and while her sister is a friend, they don't have much in common. Through it all Logan has always been the one she could count on. As they grow older, their connection deepens and their transition from best friends to lovers seems seamless until tragedy strikes. Logan disappears for five long years leaving Alyssa without a backwards glance. But since Alyssa's sister and Logan's brother are getting married, Logan returns to a town he swore he left behind. When they see each other again after years of silence, their strained relationship is put to the test when tragedy befalls them once more.

I fell in love with Logan and Alyssa right away. Their friends to lovers story was heartwarming even when their lives were less than ideal. Their friendship was real and I could feel their love and adoration for each other which made their transition to lovers so exciting. Then I was kicked in the gut with so much pain for these two and I held my breath knowing the fallout was going to hurt. And it did.

The second half of the book made me a bit frustrated with Logan. It was hard to watch his change and at times I felt a bit of a disconnect between me and the story. In turn I was also a little frustrated with Alyssa because of her apparent ability to just take whatever Logan (or anyone else) dished out to her without putting up any sort of fight. I wanted her to fight back more. Though when Logan and Alyssa finally found their footing, I was in second chance love heaven. I also appreciated the slight twist the story took because I never expected it and it brought out all the feels.

Brittainy C. Cherry is an auto buy author for a reason. She can write a story with steam, tension and more emotions than I knew I could feel in one book. The Fire Between High & Lo was exactly that.
